Understanding game registration fees and National level games
Not many has the experience on organizing a national level type game and has the understanding on how hard it is to organize one. It is a logistical nightmare. First of all, the host organizer must have sufficient funds and time in order for them to move. Second, the host organizer must have sufficient and capable manpower. Third, they must have a quality game site with quality after game activities.
A. Sufficient funding and time
Your registration fees are received after the host organizer has already put out money. In order to lower game registration fees for players, host organizers must get sponsorships. Talking to large corporations and inviting teams to play takes time and money. Most often times these come out of the pocket of the committee head in charge. Just imagine the gasoline expense and celphone bills... not to mention time lost in sacrificing one’s own job just for a hobby.
A good national level type game takes months of conceptualization and preparation. These are all not done on whim. Waiting for an invited team’s reply takes time. Constructing a quality game site takes time. Waiting for a corporation to approve sponsorship money takes time. Conceptualizing a game scenario takes time. Organizing support groups such as security and medical takes time. Waiting for teams to pay their registration fees takes time (some inconsiderate teams pay after the deadline). Fixing event bugs takes time... it doesn’t often go as planned/smoothly and sometimes a plan B, C, and D is necessary.
B. Sufficient and capable manpower
Not all the MEMBERS in a host organizing team have the time or the money to go full time. Committee heads sacrifice a lot. They need to or else it would be embarrassing for them if they fail on their tasks. remember that these positions need professionals... someone who knows how to work and is capable of marketing, accounting and administrative work. Most often times these people are well educated, well off and has the right connections. Not many have this capability.
These kinds of event also need sufficient number of experienced marshals. They must know what to do and is well versed with airsoft gaming rules. They stand by their decisions and are not swayed by threats or distractions done by unscrupulous players. Most often times, success of the event weighs heavily on how the marshals do their jobs.
The least they could get is to be fed properly during the event at no cost to them. Feeding cost money.
Organizers also need architects, engineers, carpenters, electricians and handy men. Some of these are hired help... this means their services are paid by the host organizer.
C. Quality game site and quality after game activities
What is in a national level type airsoft event? Players from all over, specifically from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao are in a national level type airsoft event. Most come from far off places and expect something that they are not use to in their local areas. Why would they want to come to an event if it doesn’t offer anything special? Marketing 101... Give them the time of their lives and offer something they cannot refuse to pass over. If you are to give them a poor man’s airsoft game, then dont bother organizing a national event. People will spend and travel so long as it’s worth it. A poor man’s airsoft event is only good for localized games.
Why travel if you can get the same thing locally?
Since these are players from far off places, you need to keep things secure and assure their personal safety. Policemen and military don’t work for free. You need to assure that their airsoft weaponries are safe during travel. You also need to talk to couriers, airport and shipping security. They also don’t work for free. How about hotel to game site transportation for teams from far off place?
After game activities... face it, these are needed to entertain teams from far off places after battling it out for two days. Bands, umbrella girls, waiters, dancers... they all don’t work for free. It is already a common practice as well to give souvenir items such as t-shirts, key chains, event video/picture CDs.
Why do national type events lure players from all over? Because it gives teams the chance to duke it out with other teams they are not use to playing with or don’t have the chance to play against without these kinds of events. Why do these kinds of events have expensive game registration fees? Because of the amount of money and effort put in to organize such an event. Unfortunately quality equates to money.
National level type games are not for everybody. Sometimes you have your Sunday players who don’t care for competitions. Sometimes you have players that are happy enough to play against nearby teams. This is what localized small events cater.
If playing in national type games challenges you, then play. If you’re happy enough with localized events, then by all means don’t play. Bottom line, if you enjoy playing in large national type events... then money won’t really matter as long as your money’s worth right?
IE
ASG Davao game registration fee for the Kadayawan event = Php 1,250.00 per player
Money spent by ASG Davao for each player who attended = Php 1,400.00 to 1,700.00
(Expense broken down from game site construction, lunch, fellowship night, RAW night and other incidentals... not considering personal money spent by ASG Davao members)
