i may start with my humble simple opinion...
a "big No"!
my Answer why: Just still my Opinion... Its a competition, so we cannot promote a total sportsmanship at all... Honesty is Lost! This games simulate a war/mil/etc alike... theres no tournament for this except for individual shooting competition.
Our regular Gamesked are now losing a players...

yes kaya nga compitition para mag promote ng sportmanship between airsofter, pero dili dyud mapugngan na naay recklamo.pero pareha ana kung naay samok siguro responsabilidad pud na sa organizer na ilang ipahiluna ang kagubot.
kung no pud akong tubag, ani lang na its a simulation of war,1 rule be killed or to kill..........
opinion ko ni jo.............

no! tournament is a way of exploiting airofters moneywise in tourneys honesty is indeed lost as said by sir alakdan because a player will strive and do anything just to win, and as sir alakdan stated it will drain the team of its players for reasons that the more "competitive" individuals will separate themselves from the mother team and form a new team simply because of the reason that some of the members of the mother team will not join them in the tourneys, as a result the team disbands. I joined this sport for plain fun granted that there will be spending required limited to gun modification, ammo and self protection nothing else if they say that tourneys still promote team work and all the causes that the airsoft community stands for well, those things were achieved a long time before we knew about airsoft the pioneers of this sport designed it to be so, now all thats left is commercialization of the sport. My team personally has suffered losses same as sir alakdan and i could also jump teams which are more active but i choose to be s.a.s and i dont care how small of a group we are but we are still here and we will play the way s.a.s used to play for fun, new friends, team work, exercise nothing more i told the remaining boys the team is alive and well. I am not condeming competitions or anything but the things written here are just sentiments same of a father that lost his sons due to this competition hype, before there were no competitions and all were ok the sport was original in a sense now look what has happened airsofters hating airsofters, flaming meesages here and there sometimes foul words are said, where is the honor there? for a long time i have been silent all I ask is you grant me this minute moment of freedom to express myself....i hope the community will understand me.

Well i cant say YES or NO either. People play airsoft for many varied reasons and some are opposing mentality. There are people into airsoft as a hobby, or as past time, for exercises, for just simple fun or as a competitive sport. On the extreme side people use airsoft not as a form of sport but as a training tool Law enforcements, MILSIM, Re-enactment, or serious team building activities. Lets see where you are right now...
Type of Players: who are you? here is quick recognition guide (no offense meant or to be taken):
Teen newbie a.k.a "n00b": Highly motivated, although might lack cohesion and understanding of the big picture.
Adult newbie: Fascinated or just curious about the guns and game. Might play just once or get hooked for good.
MilSim fan: Propped to the max, might be idealistic about airsoft – watch what you say.
Serious MilSim: Besides propping, he is dead serious about rules. “No hi-cap magazines!” – avoid ruining his ambush with your noisy hi-capacity magazines. Serious milsim guys might ask you to load only 30 rounds to the normal mags (or less).
For the game: He is counting every elimination. He gets kick out of the every "kill" before it comes routine to him. He likes to fight hard. He likes to compete. And most of all, he likes to win. And usually also is a sour loser. Watch out for him also in the field for he loves to do Knife kills.
For the fun (hangarounds): Out there to have good time. Could be one of the hang-around members of the team.
Real military: Although not often seen, he usually takes time to adjust from military training to ‘reality of airsoft combat’.
Hardcore: Long-timer with plenty of knowledge about everything in airsoft. He might be or be not involved in so called “airsoft politics”.
Robot/Zombie/Rambo: Watch out for this guy for he wont be honorable in the field. He doesn’t need backup, support, and tactics for he is a one-man-army intent on wiping out the other team regardless if he’s hit or not, just to achieve the objective, or maybe his own objective. This type is often not invited back or simply avoided.
Wannabe airsmith: This guy thinks he knows everything there is to know about airsoft guns -- by reading forums, tinkering with his own guns and quite possibly even with some unfortunate buddies of his. You might want to think twice if he offers to upgrade your gun. It is easy to get into furious debate with him about upgrading guns; he is often die-hard of his own beliefs.
Airsmith: Has accumulated proper knowledge of airsmith skills through training, experience and persistent testing. The trick is to recognize him from the wannabes.
Mentality
In different parts of the world, airsoft players and communities have their own mentalities. Even teams differ radically from each other as the following guide let’s you know.
MilSim: Imitation of real military equipment and uniforms to create realistic atmosphere. MilSim is extremely popular in Asian countries.
Hardcore MilSim: Close simulation of real military. Realism in all levels is the purpose of the exercise. Favored among certain teams in USA, Europe and Asia.
Re-enactment: Imitation of past wars and battles with as real propping as possible. Popular around the world, but in airsoft world the biggest re-enactment games have history in Japan.
Recreational: The guys who are going for plinking and picnic and weekend fun shooting it out with close friends and family.
Competitive: People who want to compete and win against other teams. Popular here in the Philippines.
Harcore, old-school: No limits, no pain barriers. In these days most hardcore guys are legends of the past as most fields/teams/countries have strict FPS and Joule limits. These guys used to play without any FPS limits, to extend where the BBs would penetrate the uniform and skin.
Training: Folks that use airsoft as training tool for real life operations sometimes called Law Enforcement Simulation (LES) or TACSIM. Although limited, it’s happening among some law enforcement circles together with some airsoft teams.
Strangely enough, the thing that binds all players are the guns, gears, and the HONOR system.
Well if your team have a large membership surely they have their own agenda in playing airsoft. Ask around And you'll be surprise what type of player or game they really want. And usually your own team mate might not be within your mind set. If you know how to mold them as a team with common mentality then that where LEADERSHIP begins.
Surely enough, if an Org doesn't give concessions for different type of players and mentality, then it will break up sooner than you could say HIT! HIT! HIT!.
Well here in Pinas, Pinoys are usually highly competitive individuals, maybe lacking teamwork thats why most of our worldclass achievements are in the INDIVIDUAL category. Most I'm not saying all of it. hehehe Thats why also airsoft Tournaments sell like hotcakes here.
If anyone feels they are exploited in tournaments then dont play simple. or choose only tournies you think for the betterment of your team. or....Like i said too many reasons and varied mentality.
Well as a team mentality, tournaments is a FORM of Battle Honors just like in real military jargon. Just like in any sport there will be conflicts and backstabbing, hey atleast noboby is RIOTING in your behalf hehehe.
WHY PLAY? I will end it as what a player long ago said in an article...."It stirs up every feeling God ever made"

there's no such thing as a perfect tounament .... no perfect marshal .... and definitely no perfect airsofter .... yet there will always be tournaments and participants .... and critics too.
if one think tournaments gets the fun out of playing airsoft then don't participate [that's plain and simple] .... our team stayed stronger as ever for the past 3 years and tournaments pushes every one of us to improve on whatever we have .... we look forward in joining more tournaments, have fun and new friends as we go along.
let the tournaments keep coming ....

i guess i am...
1. MilSim fan: Propped to the max, might be idealistic about airsoft – watch what you say.
2. For the fun (hangarounds): Out there to have good time. Could be one of the hang-around members of the team.

4. Recreational: The guys who are going for plinking and picnic and weekend fun shooting it out with close friends and family.
all you sirs stated are true......there will always be the "consulars" and the "sentinels"(basing on a PC game).. *consulars are skilled in battle but rarely enter combat *sentinels, well, combat is their life!

amen to that sir miks. so what's up for me?? i'm also an avid fan of real milsim tactics, extreme airsoft tournaments too, but for what? garnering the best of the best? nah!!! that's crap! kelan ba naging champion ang Ghost Recon sa kadami dami ng tournaments na sinalihan namin? ni isang trophy nor Best in blah blah blah, wala kaming natanggap. hahaha weaklings talaga kami! But i'm sure of one thing, andami naming naging kaibigan even outside our group because of such gathering. you know why? for us, we didn't hope to die for on our team to be the best among the rest, the cream of the crop nor the elite forces of our imaginary milsim combats. as long as we enjoyed that much especially the "Collection of Airsoft T-Shirts" as what sir miks had said. hahahala, and garnering more friends thru pure camaraderie and good sportsmanship, that is more important to us. although honestly we tend to be so anxious and upbeat during games, but still, at the end of the day we continued to shake hands with each other sharing war stories with each other and even we also introduce beautiful friends with each other. heheheh ;D as there is so much to speak about this poll. i'm not against organizing tournaments not for bragging who's the best, who's the worst, who's the "siga" nor who's the "weakest" but we were here to have a great time in the hobby we loved which at the end of the day, i can't help thinking great times were we reminisce those games over a couple of beers. it all depends on one's psyche. kung warfreak grupo nila, eh di wala tayong magawa, that alone is an action speaking louder than words. siguro naman kilala na naten mga grupong matitino and hindi. so why join and support their cause kung alam na naten na di sila maganda makitungo sa grupo at sa ibang grupo. diba? Eto naa! eto naaa! Eto naa! ahhh Dooobeeeee!!!

My vote stand for "No"...tournaments should not be stop because it is the only time where all the airosofters (1AD or non 1AD) meet, gained new friends and have the chances to know the different teams as well as the skills of every airsofters.....Also, to promote the airsoft in the community diba : : Maybe i suggest to the organizers that they should plan well the tournaments, conduct seminars for Marshals (maybe each team will contribute marshal sa organizers pra may representative - suggestion lang po) So bale kung ang maglalaro yung team ng marshal eh di siya pwedeng mag marshal to avoid bias diba... what do you think mga sirs?

tama si sir miyong but when he said weaklings? there is no such thing as weakling....as the age old airsoft saying states "wala sa man na sa pana. naa ra na sa indian". diba sir miyong? heheh!

ooops ... i picked the wrong answer to the poll ... that's why 2 votes for YES instead of only 1 ...
i should have voted NO "to stop tournaments" ... No ... No ... Never !
why No..? FUN, FRIENDS, CAMARADIERE, ADRENALIN RUSH ... these outweights whatever negative notions regarding joining tournaments.
i 101% agree with devildog ... don't push yourself looking for the perfect tournament because it simply is impossible ... we could only learn from our mistakes as organizers, marshals or players and pray we do better next time ... at the end of the day, we went home with a smile ... win or loss !
